Summer in the Mountains

There are a lot of reasons why I love living in western North Carolina, specifically Transylvania County. Right up at the top of that list are the four distinct, but moderate seasons. After living in Florida for too many years, I had become accustom to Hot and Hotter. The concept of spring and fall had been nearly forgotten.

When you think of spring and summer here in the mountains, you might think of all the flowers that are in bloom, planting tomatoes, hiking Pisgah Forest, or kayakking the French Broad River. What you might not think about though, are what the animals are up to. You know it's spring time in the mountains when the hummingbirds return and we've seen our share of coyotes. But lately, we've also been visited by black bears. (They LOVE hummmingbird food, by the way). I should mention that we live in a golf course community, not way back in the woods so I was a little surprised when two yearlings wandered onto our deck a few weeks ago. Last night, though, I got an even bigger surprise, literally. This furry visitor hung around on our deck noshing on birdseed and sipping hummingbird food for about 10 minutes before climbing over the side and wandering off to wherever bears go at night. (It's hard to see by this picture, but she was well over 5ft tall when she stood up on her hind legs to reach the bird seed.)

Having bears on my deck with nothing more than a sliding glass door seperating us isn't something I take lightly. I fully understand the danger and havoc they can cause and I would never actively encourage them to visit us more often. Just the same, it was facinating to watch this bit of nature up close. And yes, I will be bringing the bird feeder in tonight...what's left of it anyway.
