In any relationship, knowing you're with the right partner is important and being in the real estate business is no different. So on June 1, Robert and I left Keller Williams and moved to Looking Glass Realty, LLC. The two firms couldn't be more different and after being courted by several real estate companies in the Brevard, NC area, we came to the conclusion that Looking Glass was the best fit for the way we do business, how we see the future of real estate, and to coin the street term... how we roll.
It wasn't a decision we came to lightly, but like any relationship that has run its course, it was time to make a change and all the reasons to go or stay became crystal clear. But making a change like this isn't easy. It totally disrupts your usual routine and in retrospect, we could have made it easier on ourselves if we had done this in the winter when we are slow. But what the heck.....we jumped in with both feet. What a ride! We discovered that when you're in the business for more than, say, a day, it's easy to underestimate how many places you've used your company email address as a log in, how many websites that need new contact information, how many contacts you have in your data base that need to know about your move, the list goes on and on. Not to mention the mountain of paperwork for termination contracts and new listing packages that have to be written...listings that have to be withdrawn then re-entered. As part of the process, we were asked over and over again why we were changing firms and it was a client's question that crystallized all the reasons. She asked "What do you think makes a good real estate office".
There is a lot of commentary out there about what makes a good real estate agent but rarely is there discussion about what makes a good real estate office. I thought her question was excellent because it cuts right to the core of our move, and because there is no one right answer. As agents, we're all different in the way we work and what we need from our brokerage. As I told my client, some agents need and want a firm that has a big support staff to do things for them, some gravitate to firms that focus on training, while others are driven strictly by the commission split. Those are certainly important considerations, but for us it doesn't stop there. There also has to be trust, consideration, a shared direction, and loyalty...just like any good relationship.
This weekend, we are wrapping up the last of the paper work for the listings we transferred to our new firm (Keller Williams allows agents to take their listings with them...so props to KW) and preparing the paper work for 26 new listings that we took the day after our transition. For now, it's a 24/7 job but at the end of it all, we're confident in the firm we've chosen to align with, and confident that this is not just a good move for the Clay Team, but for our clients as well.
