Brevard North Carolina Real Estate Blog: I had a one night stand with Google

I had a one night stand with Google

I confess that I have been pursuing Google for nearly a year now, doing everything I could to get noticed. Sometimes I got a nod, or Google Lovemaybe a flirtatious wink, but more often than not, I would find Google spending time with others leaving me to wonder what a girl has to do to get a little Google love. Hey, look at me! I have value! I have worth! I'm embarrassed to admit that in the beginning, I even paid for a little of that love. But I knew there had to be a better way!  So I had a total make over to bring out my best features and lately I've spent long hours getting in shape, toning up my content and tightening my up my key words. And, I've been reaching out to others, learning everything I can so Google would find me interesting, informed, and relative.

So last night, bolstered with a sense of confidence, I went searching for the big G at the hottest spot in town. I couldn't believe my eyes! Not only was I on G's dance card, I was at the top of the list on the first page. Number One! Numero Uno! I gushed with excitement and wanted to shout it to the world. You like me! You really like me! I opened a bottle of my best cheap red wine and celebrated our new love. All my hard work had finally paid off. I just knew that if I took my time, and didn't push, that Google would eventually see things my way and we would be together 4-EVER!

This morning when I woke up, I was still hung over from the night's celebration, but I had a smile on my face. The birds were chirping and for some reason, the morning light seemed just a little brighter than the day before. But as I looked around I saw that Google was gone without so much as a note. It was as if it had never happened. Was it all just a dream? Had my passionate desire to be G's #1 played tricks on my brain? No, I saw what I saw and what I saw was real. I was there at the top of the list, ahead of all the others who had captured so much of Google's time and attention in the past. So how could it all be over so fast? What possible explanation could there be for what I saw this morning. Once again, Google had forsaken me for others, relegating me and my hard work to a distant 3rd page.

My one night stand with Google was exciting for sure and one that I can openly talk about now that I have had some time to think about it. Some day, I might even tell my grandchildren the story of how I made it to the top of Google's list that one December night back in 2008. But like any of life's experiences, there are lessons to be learned. And if I learned anything, it is that Google is fickle and suffers from some serious commitment issues. Will Google ever change? I doubt it. So today, it's back to basics as I remain resolute in my goal of once again being Google's number one.

What a fun read!  Congratulations for making it to #1 even though it was only for a night.

Thanks Kathy.....after really digging in and working hard on SEO issues, I have to admit that it was a blast seeing our name at the top of the most coveted search phrase. It was fun while it lasted. Maybe I should have taken a picture!

Thanks for stopping by.

I wonder if there are any support groups for google addicts?  If so, I should attend.  I check SERPS regularly as do a lot of us.  Great read.

Posted by Keith McMullin, Port Aransas Real Estate (Port Aransas Realty) over 10 years ago

Hey Keith, is it any wonder that all this has spawned a wave of Google addicts? There is so much emphasis put on SEO and rankings that it's enough to make anyone feel insecure and anxious. The big question, and a topic for another post, is how much does it really have on our bottom line.

Carol- That post is well deserved of the gold star it adorns! Very funny and fun to read. Keep working at it and you will get to spend more time with Google as numero uno! Good content and proper linking and keyword strategies.

Do not despair as google sometimes shows you the future placements. Google has a number of data centers and you do not get the same result each time. Sometimes the changes occur over a series of days and others its just testing a new result. Best of luck

Great story.  I hope to tell a similar story for our market.

Carol-  Don't give up now.  Keep tweaking your site and Google will continue to reward you, until you remain comfortably at or near the top of the first page.

Carol~ You should have used SnagIt so you could see it and also be able to show it to us!  Hey!  You will get to be number one again, I am sure.

Eric's comment above about different datacenters is what I have seen many times.  Sometimes it takes awhile for the new results to propagate through all the datacenters.  Sometimes the "good" results don't stick.

Eight years ago I had the same thing happen to me.  It lasted one day and then there was a Google Dance and I went into oblivion.  But over the next few months, I started to get good results and things have been pretty good ever since.

Oh Oh Oh what a lift only to crash down to pieces!  I feel your pain...Google must be all MEN! LOL Fickle as can be.

It always amazes me how people find me on the net with something I just never expected.  Google excitement is fleeting for sure but people search all kinds of ways and in different areas and one never knows when & how you'll pop up.  Don't worry, be happy!

Thanks to everyone for stopping by and sharing my sob story with me. We really have worked hard on being the "prettiest girl at the dance" and have been rewarded by being somewhere on the top three pages of all the most relevant search terms and phrases. But this was the first time we had been at the top of the top.I wish I had taken a screen shot....but silly me, I thought it would last! LOL

Vickie - I need to look in to SnagIt. I saw it on another post but have neglected to follow up on learning more.

Eric and Tim - I didn't know that about the data centers. I'm not sure I still understand it, but it's nice to have some sort of explanation.

Richard - I'm usually the monogamous type, but if Yahoo plays the right cards, you never know! LOL

Rita, Kerry, Marilyn, David, Nester and Katarina - thank you all for your kind words of support.

It's great to see all of you!

Great job at becoming #1, even if it was just for a moment...  Here's to reaching the top again!

Posted by JB Brookman, High School Senior Portrait Photographer (JB Brookman Photography) over 10 years ago

Hi Carol,

Very clever! I found Eric's comment very interesting. Thanks to AR we're usually on G page one for two out of my 3 key words in my city, although we've never been #1, I just happy to even be on page one, the more I post the better the better our ranking. Once in a while we're three for three, but it changes too.

Don't give up, keep up the good work and soon you will be the new dance queen.

Carol - what a GREAT analogy! I was also hoping you had a screen shot to remember. You know, sort of like the prom photos you have lying around? Oh well, I'm sure you'll do it again and next time you'll bring your camera LOL

Carol - I have experienced this as well.  I have also been #1 for years, only to have them completely change their algorithm (I'm still in the top five for every term I care about).  Google is a fickle mistress (or mister in your case?).

Poor naive me. I thought once you got there, you stayed there if you continued to do what it took to get you there.  I guess if I google me and EVER find myself in the top 5, I won't take it too seriously.

Posted by LS Rogers Realty (LS Rogers Realty) over 10 years ago

I've have been on and off of Google's first page and enjoyed the triumphs and defeats.  That said, I've found that once you get to page one, it seems easier to get back.  Keep trying and good luck.

Oh made my day.  Loved this, as sometimes we do get so caught up in the placement or points that we forget it's about content and a bit a fun along the way.  Fun post.  Keep on keeping on, see you on page 3 or 2 or 1???

Carol... I am sure that felt great.  Just a FYI... someone wrote a blog about Google changing... this was about a month ago. Unfortunately, I can remember what they were going to change. And I think it was mentioned that Google was going to do away with key words... I'll try and find that blog.

That is cool and  lots of work!! I have been writing blogs for a couple of years lots of top spots the one that was the best was Number 1&2 google search out of 1,450,000,000 (yes billion) two weeks ago and is holding. It grab the attention of a networking radio show, They ask for an hour show with my own comercials, now that was work, but so much fun another great learning experiment. It has been my goal with to bring a selling platform for not just real estate but anything. From the conception of my site I used real estate to market my baby, the funny thing is with the changes in the market only a couple have taken advantage of what I have done.

Do a google search bank repos norco, bank repos canyon lake, bank repos corona just about any southern cal inland area I am on front pages lots of number 1s with the networking sites and my blog sites ( one of many I own). These are for you real estate pros to take and run. Together we can take all areas to the top blogs written in a joint effort on multiple sites, HINT we are expanding your walls and the network here at activerain.

Carol, lovely writing. I so am trying to learn this to get the love too.  I guess if it was easy EVERYONE would be on page one. Now how would that happen??? LOL

Fickle lover, that is what Google is without a doubt.

Posted by Fred Chamberlin, Oak Harbor/Whidbeynulls, #1 Experienced FHA Mortgage Consultant (Guild Mortgage Co - Oak Harbor WA) over 10 years ago

wow... not so sure I can be so excited about being number one on a Google search.  Your next goal should be to dominate the top 10 searches in a Google search.  For example, google a street in my neighborhood farm and I better dominate a google search, or I won't be happy.  Try to google inshore drive austin as an example.  Domination is much stronger than just being number one. Keep pushing.  Great job.

That was a great read!  I know the feeling of waiting and waiting and finally seeing your site on that first page....

It's good to hear about your "meaningful" one night stand.  I think Google may be like some men I've known - They can love you and leave, say you are number 1, but also say it to someone else, and prove it quite shortly :-)  Alas, life imitates Google - Google imitates life :-)

Fickle...that's what Google is. Love ya and leave ya....I've seen it all before.  But I know what you mean...there's just something that keeps drawing me back in, like a moth to a flame.

Stay strong!

What a great, funny, well written post. I go for being on the first page and don't care if I am number one or not.  In case you have not yet -put your self on the google map you might want to read my post on doing so. I have it listed on my profile page.  (also the one on H Cards)

Posted by Eileen Begley, Monterey Real Estate (Coldwell Banker, DelMonte) about 10 years ago

Hey Eileen,

I went to your profile and read all the good stuff you've included. I like the idea of adding your previous posts to your profile. Good idea!

I'm still a little confused about H cards, what they are, and how they help. Can you expand on that here for all of us?

Posted by Carol Clay, Broker/REALTOR, Brevard NC Real Estate Specialist (Looking Glass Realty) about 10 years ago

Hi Carol; The H Card is like a "locater beacon".  It shouts out to the search engines that this is an ADDRESS.  Google is the smartest and doesn't need it as much but it does pay attention to it.  I put an H card on my blog and on the about page of my website.  Getting on the google map is great. Also adding an H Card helps you get in that "top 10 box" that google sometimes puts up on an especially popular search term for geographic area.  Competing sites such as say Trulia can not get in the "top 10 box" as they are not physically located in that town.  Hope this helps. Guess I need to update that blog and explain better. :)

Posted by Eileen Begley, Monterey Real Estate (Coldwell Banker, DelMonte) about 10 years ago

Hilarious Take!!! All the best in your quest to rekindle this relationship. I have had a bit of a fling with Google in the past. Sometimes I bump into her buddy Yahoo! as well. I have to admit I used to have a crush on Yahoo! several years ago but she seems to have really let herself go!

Posted by Shaun Serafini, B.MGT (Shaun Serafini - Mortgage Expert - All Source Mortgages ) about 10 years ago

Thanks Shaun....I haven't flirted with Yahoo just yet. Google seems to be the BMOC with the most muscle. Does that make me shallow?? LOL
